Fiji Girmit Foundation NZ
REMEMBERING · CELEBRATING · ADVOCATING
Preserving the history, culture, and resilience of the indentured labourers who journeyed from India to Fiji between 1879 and 1916.
The Fiji Girmit Foundation New Zealand (FGFNZ) was founded in December 2012 in St Lukes, Auckland, with a heartfelt purpose — to honor the journey, struggles, and achievements of Fiji Indians from their Girmit roots to life in Aotearoa.
FGFNZ’s mission is to retrieve, reconnect, reclaim, and restore the foundational history of Fiji Indians while celebrating their evolving identity in New Zealand. The Foundation promotes cultural pride, language preservation, and community wellbeing through collaboration with government, tangata whenua, and diverse communities.
At its heart, the Foundation stands to give Fiji Indians a voice, celebrate our shared heritage, and ensure that our stories continue to inspire generations to come.
