About Fiji Girmit Foundation NZ

Fiji Girmit Foundation New Zealand (FGFNZ) is dedicated to preserving, celebrating and advocating the heritage of the Girmitiyas — the indentured labourers who journeyed from India to Fiji between 1879 and 1916.

Keeping Girmit history alive for future generations

Fiji Girmit Foundation NZ exists to honour the courage, endurance and cultural resilience of the Girmitiya. We work to preserve stories, memories, traditions and legacies that shaped Fiji Indian identity and continue to inspire communities in New Zealand.

Through remembrance, education, events and community connection, the Foundation helps keep this history visible, meaningful and relevant for younger generations.
